Whenever there is a disagreement between the insurance company and the insured in the amount owed for repairs following a covered loss, that's where an appraiser comes in. This is called Alternative Dispute Resolution. The insured will hire their appraiser and the insurance company will hire theirs. Both appraisers will come together to assess the damages and determine causation and value of the damages. When there is a disagreement between the appraisers, or an impasse, the appraisers will decide on an umpire to mediate the dispute. If the Appraisers can not agree on an umpire, one will be court appointed.
